A Condominium is actually a legal definition that refers to the method of ownership, not the type of building.  Any type of home - including single family detached home, zero lot line, townhome, duplex -  can be a condominium.

When you buy a condo, you own the interior space of your home outright.  A monthly association fee covers general repairs and maintenance to the common areas as well as building up a cash reserve for future needs. The normal day-to-day maintenance of the grounds such as landscaping, snow removal, garbage pickup, are the responsibility of the association, while interior maintenance and repairs are the responsibility of the individual owner.   For many people, the small monthly cost is offset by expenses they used to have when they lived elsewhere.
